Connection!

I have made a connection through characters in two different novels! From reading New Moon, and Twilight I really got a feel for Bella’s personality, and how someone like Edward really changed her. In Just Listen, Anabell is another girl you can really get a feel for because she is telling the story. In Twilight, and New Moon so is Bella, and their names are similar too!

Bella starts out as sort of a gloomy not excited about life kind of person. When she meets Edward her whole life changes, she feels loved, and has a whole new outlook on life. Anabell meets Owen and similar things happen to her. She is given new appreciations, and perspectives for life by Owen. He opened her eyes to new things, just like Edward had to Bella. Owen and Edward are like Anabell, and Bella’s happy people; they want to be around them the most.

I wish that their was visual pictures given of the characters in my novel. While reading Just Listen I have an image in my head of what each character looks like, and I would like to know just how accurate I am. Knowing what a character looks like would help me maybe figure out what their actions could be and just understand the novel better. For example, I have a somewhat mental image of how Owen Armstrong appears, but I could be completely off. You never know what the author imagines when making certain characters. It would be cool to know exactly how they wrote them to be. This could really help authors portray messages through their writing as well, especially if they’re writing about stereotypes.

I think Anabell meeting Owen Armstrong is going to help her through all of the hard times she has been going through. Her sister has problems,and shes really not that close with most of her family members. She needs someone to turn to, or someone to get her mind off of the bad things happening. Owen is very different, and not the kind of person she’s used to which leaves her very interested about him resulting in them probably hanging out more. He can introduce her to new ways of looking at life and give her new interests. They can relate to each other because they both have gone through rough times, and are not what they look like from the outside. Anabell may be a model and symbolize perfection, but theres much more to her underneath it all. Then with Owen he looks like someone you wouldnt want to mess with but deep down he has true feelings and kind of a sensitive side.

In Just Listen, all three of the daughters: Whitney, Anabell, and Kirsten all pursue modeling careers. Modeling is something that comes up often in this story and can be pushed away at times too. I think modeling almost symbolizes Anabell’s family issues. Some family members are really into it and want to keep up with modeling, while some just want to give it up and do their own thing even though someone else might not be ok with it. This can relate to the issue among Anabell’s family. Her family is known to just act like everything is fine and not try and really solve their problems. Some of her family is just going down the wrong path and their too exhausted to try and fix it. With modeling its just like they go through the steps dont really try to make drastic changes like with their family issues. There isn’t ever any drastic change to try and solve these problems; it’s like they almost give up cause things are so bad.

My book has taken such a sudden downfall! Things werent too too bad at first with Anabell and her family, but now they are absolutely horrible and very sad. In a matter of months her sister Whitney has been put in the hospital! I couldn’t believe what I was reading. What was happening was so intense I had to keep reading! I had no intention of reading very long at all either.

This downfall with Anabell’s sister is going to change her family practically forever. I truly have sympathy for Anabell. She is the daughter that is just kind of forgotten about now. Her family doesn’t even give her details of whats going on. If my sister were in the hospital and dramatically having issues with health, I would want to know everything! What could I do to help? What exactly is her condition? I couldn’t be in Anabell’s shoes and not try and do something about how her family is turning out.

Narration

My book “Just Listen” has first person narration. This has to be my favorite kind of narration for any story. I love knowing the thoughts of who is telling the story; it supplies way more information for better understanding. The person telling my novel is Annabell. Her telling the story is best because she is the one dealing with certain people such as her sister with an eating disorder and her mom who went through depression. I think it means more when you read what the people around it all the time are feeling rather than the actual people going through it. You get a different feeling from watching it rather than going through a condition like depression.

If someone like Anabell’s mom were telling the story with negativity because of her depression, the reader may not understand necessarily why she feels a certain way. They just might find the book as a whole depressing. Also I like how the narration is from someone in my age group. This really affects my interest in reading the book because I may be able to relate to what Anabell is feeling.

I have decided to switch novels! Now I am reading Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. Ever since people who read it over the summer said it really good I have been wanting to read it. As I started to just for kicks, I really kind of got into it and just decided to switch. The other story I was reading just seemed boring compared to it. From the very little I have read so far, the story seems intense. It may not be action packed, but its intense drama!

I am very curious as to the story behind Annabell and Sophie. What happened between them that was so bad? Annabell seems to be a really sweet and caring character. She was first to making an effort to talk to Sophie trying to make her feel more welcome to the new neighborhood. That can be a big step for someone to take, and Annabell has really taken that into perspective. I sense that Sophie may have a rough background because of her reaction to talking to new people. She may have been rude to Annabell at first because she has been hurt before and didnt want the same thing to happen if she brought someone else close. Also, her interest in Kirsten and her friends shows that she probably envys their lifestyle.

If my mother ever left me or my family, I would be absolutely devastated. I really hope Sal can get her mom to come back home. I’m not even far into the book and I already have sympathy and feel for the fact that her mother is gone. A daughter, no matter how old, will always need their mother. Sal has been told by many basically just to give up on getting her mom to come home. To me, Sal seems like a very strong and determind character. She has gone all her life being told that getting her mom back is like “trying to catch a fish in the air.” The fact that she is only thirteen and still hasn’t let sayings like that stop her is awesome! I would like to know why her mother left in the first place.

I have chosen to read Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. This has always been one of those titles I hear people say but I’ve never read or even knew the story line. Since my sister owns and its convienent, I decided I will find out why its so great. The story line sounds great too, there seems to be alot happening and the boring factor shouldn’t be a problem. In the story, the main character is on a journey for the search of her mom. If I had a missing mother I’m sure I would do the same. You have to know where you came from. While on her journey she learns more about her friend which turns into something outrageous; its basically two big journeys traveled at once! I really hope I get into this book.

My Favorite Character

In New Moon I’d have to say my favorite character is Jacob. Bella went through alot of hard times with the breakup, and just kind of finding herself. She would try to have fun with friends like everyone else would do, but it still didnt satisfy her. When Jacob came into the picture it was like ”hallelujah”; finally something for Bella to do instead of sit around and mope about Edward. Even when Bella was with Jacob she would forget about the sorrow she felt, and actually have a good time for once since Edward left. Fixing up motorcycles may be random, but it brought Bella a new companion or buddy. Also I personally would probably prefer to date a werewolf than a vampire who wanted to suck the blood right out of me whenever I was with him. My favor towards Jacob may have a little to do with how cute he is in the actual movie. Although I still haven’t determined whether I am team Jacob or team Edward.
